Tooth alignment
As we grow older, it is almost normal for the front teeth to become more
crowded, especially in the lower jaw. This occurs even if no orthodontic treatment
has been provided. To resist this, most patients will choose to leave the fixed
retainers (thin wires cemented to the inner surface of the anterior teeth) in place
long-term. We always follow-up patients up for 12 months after treatment to
ensure that the teeth have stabilized and that these fixed retainers are adequately
maintained. In the rare event that they become unstuck or break after a few years,
they can be easily replaced. An alternative option is to wear a night-time retainer as
often as necessary to ensure it’s continued fit, typically once or twice a week.
